− | == Project Overview ==
| |
| | | |
− | This is Fang's CCRMA-CCARH Research Project
| |
− |
| |
− | The EAST in Project EAST stands for "East Asian Songs and Texts".
| |
− |
| |
− | There are two major implementation goals for this project:
| |
− |
| |
− | === Computational Analysis of Melodies and Texts ===
| |
− | This portion of the project aims to implement a program that reads in music data files (text files) and performs several useful melody and/or text analysis functions on the music. The idea for this program is based on Stanford's CCARH-developed [http://humdrum.ccarh.org Humdrum Toolkit]. It should work like an interactive command line toolkit for performing analysis. The program can process multiple files to provide statistical information or give specific details on singular pieces. By combining both capabilities, the program seeks to provide a computational basis for melody and text-in-relation-to-melody comparison among music collections.
| |

| |
− | === Database Creation ===
| |
− | This portion of of the project aims to provide a comprehensive collection of well-documented East Asian Music from Japan and Taiwan for the existing [http://kern.humdrum.org Kern Scores] music database. The collections will be taken from source collections compiled in the respective source regions and details believed to be crucial to future analysis such as text, exact geographical region and historical background will be preserved. The music information will be converted to kern files and be hosted on the kern scores website as the project proceeds. For more background on the existing Essen collection and issues found during early stages of research, refer to the relevant section below.

| |
− | === Concerns Regarding the Current Kern Scores Collection ===
| |
− | Prior to the start of the project, the kern scores database had a collection of folk music from [http://kern.ccarh.org/cgi-bin/browse?l=essen/asia/china China] under the [http://www.esac-data.org Essen Folksong Collection] as well as sporadic pieces of folk music from Japan.
